U.S. to hit debt ceiling no later than May 16

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. will reach the debt ceiling no later than May 16, according to an updated forecast from Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner released on Monday. The new estimate clarifies an earlier government projection that the debt ceiling would be reached between April 15 and May 31. Treasury could undertake some special measures to avoid the debt limit, but these short-term steps would be exhausted around July 8, Geithner said in a letter to Congressional leaders.
